City Guide ยท East vs West Metro

Minneapolis vs St. Paul: Which Side of the River?

They're genuinely two different cities with different personalities and different suburb spheres. Getting this right first saves enormous time in your search.

Out-of-state buyers often refer to "Minneapolis" when they mean the broader metro โ€” which makes sense from the outside. But locally, Minneapolis and St. Paul are distinct cities with distinct identities, and the suburb that makes sense for your life depends significantly on which city you're oriented toward. Getting this right from the start eliminates half the metro immediately and focuses your search.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ Minneapolis

Minnesota's commercial, financial, and creative capital. Larger, denser, more corporate. Home to Target, US Bancorp, Ameriprise, and most Fortune 500 HQs. Strong arts scene, active food culture, and the best airport access (MSP is in Bloomington, south of Minneapolis).

๐Ÿ›๏ธ St. Paul

Minnesota's state capital. More historic, more residential in character, slightly quieter. Summit Avenue is one of the best-preserved Victorian residential streets in the US. Home to Ecolab, Securian Financial, and state government. 3M's global HQ is in Maplewood, just east.

Minneapolis: Bigger, Bolder, More Corporate

Minneapolis is the larger of the two cities โ€” Minnesota's commercial, financial, and creative capital. The arts scene is nationally recognized: the Guthrie Theater, First Avenue, and the Walker Art Center all call Minneapolis home. The food scene โ€” consistently ranked among the strongest in the Midwest โ€” is centered in neighborhoods like the North Loop, Uptown, and Linden Hills.

Minneapolis has stronger transit infrastructure, a more active cycling network, and higher urban density. If your employer is in Minneapolis or the western suburbs (Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Plymouth, Maple Grove), Minneapolis is your orientation point.

Western/southwestern suburbs: Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Plymouth, Maple Grove, Edina, Bloomington, Richfield, Hopkins, St. Louis Park.

St. Paul: Historic, Quieter, More Residential

St. Paul is Minnesota's state capital and has a distinctly different character โ€” more historic, more architecturally rich, and more neighborhood-oriented. Grand Avenue, Cathedral Hill, and Mac-Groveland are vibrant, walkable neighborhoods with independent restaurants and boutiques. The pace of St. Paul is slightly slower and more residential in character.

St. Paul has its own strong employer base: Ecolab, Securian Financial, and Minnesota state government. 3M's global headquarters is in Maplewood, just east of St. Paul. If your employer is in St. Paul or the eastern suburbs, St. Paul is your orientation point.

Eastern suburbs: Woodbury, Cottage Grove, Oakdale, Maplewood, Shoreview, Roseville, Arden Hills, White Bear Lake, Stillwater.

The Commute Reality

The distance between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul is about 10 miles โ€” roughly 20โ€“25 minutes without traffic, 35โ€“50 minutes during peak rush hour. If your job is in one city and you buy a home on the other side, you're adding meaningful commute time every single day. The metro is large enough that this matters significantly over a year.

First question I ask every relocation client: Where is your office? Before we discuss any suburb, commute direction needs to be established. This one factor typically eliminates half the metro and cuts your search time in half.

Which Side Is Right for You?

  • Choose Minneapolis-oriented suburbs if you work in Minneapolis or the western suburbs, you prioritize urban proximity and nightlife access, or you want the fastest access to MSP Airport.
  • Choose St. Paul-oriented suburbs if you work in St. Paul, Maplewood, or the eastern suburbs, you prefer a quieter and more established suburban character, or you're drawn to the Stillwater/St. Croix River area.
  • Either works if you work remotely, your office is centrally located near the airport or a mid-metro suburb, or you have genuine flexibility on commute direction.

Not Sure Which Side Fits You?

On a 30-minute call we can map this out quickly based on your job, lifestyle, and priorities. Most buyers have a clear answer within the first five minutes โ€” they just needed someone to ask the right questions.
